PRESS RELEASE

The exhibition SERPIENTES by Aurora Pellizzi is the outcome of a long standing research that included a residency in the Middle Atlas in 2015. The installation is composed of works that explore textile culture and its ritual and symbolic significance. The works address fertility and the female body’s relation to hidden knowledge, enquiring into different functional and spiritual planes where women exert specific forms of empowerment. The project aims to consider the traditional production of textiles as a refined technology used for storytelling, sacred protocols, community binding and timekeeping.

Aurora Pellizzi is a Mexican artist working between Mexico, New York and Colombia. She studied art at The Cooper Union School of Art in New York and art history at New York University. Pellizzi has had solo shows at Eyelevel BQE and The Cooper Union in New York, and at the Museo La Casona Spencer in Mexico. She has exhibited collectively in Instituto de Visión and Artbo Fair in Bogotá, Colombia; Uno Caña, Material Art Fair, Salón ACME, and Casa Mauuad in Mexico City; Artissima Art Fair in Torino; and at Spring/Break Art Fair, Y Gallery, and Abrons Art Center in New York, among others. Her work has been reviewed in Artishock, Le Quotidien de L’Art, Dazed Digital, Blouin Art Info, Hyperallergic, and Haper’s Bazaar.

Natalia Valencia Arango (Bogotá, 1984) is an independent curator based in Mexico City. She has curated exhibitions at Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros in México City, L´appartement 22 in Rabat, Museo Quinta de Bolívar in Bogotá, Proyectos Ultravioleta in Guatemala, among others. In 2013 she worked as fellow researcher for Centre Pompidou in Paris. She is editor at large of Terremoto magazine www.terremoto.mx.

L’appartement 22 was founded in 2002 by Abdellah Karroum following a series of gatherings, discussions and expeditions. L’appartement 22 has played a fundamental role in the transformation of the art scene in Morocco for the last two decades, working with a generation of artists addressing major issues of gender and freedom of expression in a region where politics, religion and economy are often exclusive items of traditional and post-independence power.
